While serving as a police officer, Ben Emerson simultaneously held a controlling interest in the Eagle restaurant. A frequent traveller Emerson was noted for his deep pockets. The local's picked up on this when partner Clyde Hawthorne disappeared with a large amount of cash. As the news of Hawthorne's disappearance spread, creditors of the Eagle establishment descended upon the location to inquire as to the their interests. Ben hurried in with a sack of gold coins settling all outstanding debts. Emerson soon thereafter purchased a house for $325 at 1597 West First Street, just outside of the tenderloin district. Emerson was wealthy enough to spend entire summers away from the city. One favorite vacation spot was Fred Heap's mountain ranch.
