Fugitive in Colton shooting sends letter to The Sun

COLTON - A fugitive on the run from police has once again reached out to The Sun in an attempt to persuade the court of public opinion.
Michael Joseph Monson Jr., the 25-year-old alleged San Bernardino gang member who police say shot and killed 52-year-old Jose Luis Moya on April 6, sent a letter to The Sun from San Diego with an April 24 postmark.
In the letter, which Monson dated April 22, he reiterates he shot Moya, the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend's mother, in self defense. Monson confronted Moya because he believed he may have abused his daughter, who lives at the Orange Avenue home where the incident occurred.
Monson says Moya, infuriated by his questioning, came after him with a knife he used to cut fruit. During the struggle the gun Monson drew discharged, shooting Moya in the head, he said.
Police say Monson is armed and dangerous and has an "extensive criminal history," which Monson denies. He has tattoos of horns on his head, "Verdugo" on the back of his neck, "#7 WESTSIDE" on his torso and a skull on his right arm, police say.
In the letter, Monson says he'd like to turn himself in soon, but he's worried "Colton and San Bernardino" police will "kill" him. Colton Det. Jack Morenberg says Monson won't be harmed if he submits to authorities. Morenberg said Monson can surrender to any law enforcement agency if he doesn't feel safe doing so locally.

SAN BERNARDINO - An armed robber shot and killed the owner of a Mt. Vernon Avenue market Monday night.
San Bernardino police received a call from an employee of Best Market at 818 N. Mt. Vernon Ave. about a shooting. Video surveillance from the store showed the encounter lasted about 10 seconds.

"All we see is the guy walk in, shoot him and leave," said San Bernardino police Lt. Brian Koerner.

When police arrived, they found 45-year-old Amarjit Singh suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Singh, a Riverside resident, was working behind the cash register when the gunman walked in at 9:39 p.m. Police aren't sure what was said, because there was no audio captured by the video camera.

"We believe it was a robbery attempt," Koerner said.

An employee was working in the back of the store at the time of the shooting.

Police sent the video footage to a lab to be enhanced in an attempt to identify the shooter.

The store is located across from the Home of Neighborly Services and one block north of territory long associated with the Lil Counts gang.

A 32-year-old San Bernardino man was shot and killed by police after firing a gun and running from them on Saturday.

The shooting happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. when two police officers on patrol saw a man, later identified by police as Lorenzo Baca walking alone with a sharp object sticking out of his rear pants pocket in the 800 block of West 5th Street at the Interstate 215 overpass, according to a San Bernardino police news release.

As police tried to stop the man, he began running west. One officer chased him before he turned toward the officer and fired a handgun, police said.

The officer fired back and the man continued running before firing a second shot. The officer fired again as the man ran down a steep embankment before reaching into his front waistband and ignoring the officer’s orders to show his hands, police said. The officer shot the man.

He was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he died a short time later.

A loaded semi-automatic handgun and screwdriver were found nearby.

Neither officer was shot. One officer complained of knee pain.

The case was turned over to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office to be reviewed.

A man matching Baca’s name and age has a lengthy record in San Bernardino County Superior Court files.

Among the cases are 2003 guilty pleas to a loaded firearm and buying or receiving stolen property charges for which he received a 16-month prison sentence, and a 2004 guilty plea to assault with a firearm for which he received a four-year prison term. He had burglary convictions in 1998 and 1999.

San Bernardino police have arrested a man and woman in the death of a man whose body was found beneath a woodpile in a San Bernardino backyard.

Victor Moran Angulo, 38, and Olga Varela, 32, both of San Bernardino, were taken into custody Thursday, June 7, at a home in the 500 block of West Magnolia Avenue, the Police Department said in a news release.

Angulo is suspected of murder in the death of Angel Cortez, 21, whose body was found May 22 under a woodpile in a backyard in the 200 block of East 11th Street, police said. Varela is suspected of being an accessory to murder.

Police did not release any information about why they believe Angulo, who was arrested by the Police Department’s gang team, killed Cortez. He had been shot and burned, police said.

Varela, who police described as Angulo’s girlfriend, was found in the home with him and booked as an accessory, the said
