WAR OF THE UNDERWORLD: Nick Licata vs. Joseph Dippolito.

Key Players

Nick Licata a notorious underworld figure with familial ties to Detroit's Tocco and Zerilli families. Licata made a push for control of lucrative Los Angeles family holdings following the deportation of Simone Scozzari and the death of Frank Desimone in August 1967 effectively splitting the Los Angeles family in rival factions.

Joseph Charles Dippolito Powerful southern California rackets figure whose contacts and financial holdings were the envy of a number of rival factions within the Los Angeles underworld. Dippolito successfully fended off a number of challenges to his growing influence but a fateful run in with members of the Los Angeles Police Departments Intelligence Squad marred his attempts to solidy control following the deportation of Simone Scozzari and the death of Frank Desimone in August 1967.

Judge Jesse W. Curtis a jurist whose career spanned four decades on the bench, including a 28-year stint as a U. S. District Court judge for Central California. The San Bernardino native died in August 5, 2008 in Irvine, California at the age of 102. A disciple of Senator Ralph E. Swing, Curtis was appointed to the bench by Governor Earl Warren in 1953. Curtis served in San Bernardino Superior Court for nine years at which time President John F. Kennedy elevated him to the Central District Court in 1962. Born December 26, 1905 in San Bernardino, Jesse W. Curtis was a graduate of San Bernardino High School, the University of Redlands and Harvard Law School class of 1932. Judge Curtis jailed Licata for refusing to answer questions before a federal grand jury in 1969.

Jospeh E. Matrangaled an active faction of the San Diego crime family with shifting loyalties The Matranga influence stemmed from their blood ties to Papa John Prizziola of the Detroit family. An ill-fated business deal briefly led to a rift between the Matranga's and Joseph Dippolito. Matranga's efforts to make amends while refusing to take sides in the battle for control of the Los Angeles family served to undermine his own tenuous hold over the San Diego faction.
