The Metropolitan Police Department's narcotics unit and federal authorities concluded a year long operation that led to the seizure of 80 pounds of methamphetamine, 9.6 kilograms of cocaine, 1.25 gallons of PCP and 23.5 pounds of marijuana, heroin and MDMA aka ectasy, 171 weapons and the arrest of 70 suspects. D. C. Police established a high-tech recording studio in a stylish Northeast neighborhood where they proceeded to make deals for revolvers, shotguns, ammunition, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, ectasy and at one point entertained an offer to secure hand grenades and a rocket launcher. The veteran undercover team established Manic Enterprises under the direction of 'Rich Valdez' head of a string of recording studios. Among the highlights of the investigation was the detention of James Deale, who admitted to selling undercover officers AR-15 assault rifles and made-to-fit handgun silencers which officers advised were hard to find on the street.

It is indicative of the scale of illicit activity that the music industry and it's rather unique accounting practices mask in terms of the use of narcotics as an alternate form of currency. Many of the most successful records labels are in reality drug labels. In place of cash, artists are fronted narcotics in exchange for their services "whatever they may be." This is one of the reasons so many artists are perpetually cash poor. In the next day or so I will detail a local case that garnered little if any attention nationally but involved a figure tied into many of the west coasts best selling artists. His name is virtually unknown "with the exception of the most dedicated crimefile readers," but he connected the dots between a number of well known financiers, political figures, social activists and rap-impresarios.

It`s funny I`ve never realized how ingrained this practice was. There`s that thing where "Big Meech" was paying off some popular rapper (I forgot his name) with drugs.

It`s funny how that name Morris Levy keeps coming up. I`m reading Grandmaster Flash`s book and that comes up a lot in that book. Just a thought.

I never realized Levy had such a history. The model for Hesh in "The Sopranos". It`s funny that a lot of the music mogul types felt as though they had to cheat their artists.

It`s funny that Levy and Alan Freed tried to trademark the phrase "rock and roll".
