Giovanni "John" and James L. Vai

The Vai family through the efforts of Giovanni Sr, and Giacomo entered the Cucamonga wine business as original investors in the Italian Vineyard Company. Giovanni and Giacomo are listed along with Ambrogio Vignolo, Angelo Bessolo, Joe Pagliano and Secondo Guasti Sr, as the purchasers of a 1,200 acre patch of South Cucamonga in 1900. As Guasti worked toward assembling the acreage that would one day make the Italian Vineyard Company, the World's largest vineyard, the Vai brothers purchased the Cucamonga Winery and began producing a notable wine. Following the passage of the 18th Amendment, the Via operation switched to producing an Elixer Tonic that was marketed to druggist and doctors.

As repeal approached, the family operation had passed into the capable hands of James "company President" and his brother Giovanni Jr, who served as vice-president. The value of the old Cucamonga Winery soared as the brothers secured the first federal bond number in the state of California during prohibition. They would go onto establish themselves as industry leaders following repeal by following the example of their family by actively promoting their products. This included hosting Hollywood celebrities and allowing their vineyard property to be used in the production of a number of feature films.

    Illicit beer
    Illicit wine.

The quality of liquor provided by each source was directly attributable to the source from which it was secured. Each also posed special advantages depending upon your role in the liquor operation. For instance there were the foreign importers who operated a legitimate enterprise and were beyond the scope of U.S., law. There were the domestic importers of the foreign liquor who form the class we most commonly associate with

Actually it was the start of a post that was never completed. What you see is a partial list that I was putting up detailing some of the key figures I found in their business records.
