It is interesting that John Roselli is so often quoted as being sent west to oversee the Capone mobs interests in Los Angeles. The problem with this is those who support the claim that Roselli was a Capone plant can or has shown what interests the Capone mob had in Los Angeles. There is also no evidence that there was a Capone link in Los Angeles at the time Roselli arrived. It is without a doubt evidence that Roselli hired on and continued to work for one of the local outfits. Anyone know who it was who first employed Roselli as a gunman and bodyguard in Los Angeles? Cool

My guess would be Tony Cornero.

Johnny is one of my favorite underworld caracters of all time, his was a life that would have made a great movie.

You are correct, he did work for Cornero. How this equates to a Chicago link is beyond me. Roselli's initial foray into Las Vegas was with Cornero, the influence and power Johnny had in Vegas stemmend from his links to the powers that were in Vegas most of whom in the early days were Los Angeles figures. Johnny was enlisted by Chicago to help in their belated entry into the Vegas market. In the two cases where Roselli represented Chicago it was late in the game in the case of the IATSE and the attempted purchase of the Vegas casino. A last ditch effort at trouble shooting. I am interested to see where someone can show a definitive link to Roselli as an outfit guy and not a Los Angeles figure. Wink

Didn't Jimmy the Weasel say in his book that Roselli was in the Outfit.

Yes he did, Jimmy stated he transfered to the Chicago family after Dragna died. It was also said that Johnny was made in Chicago under Capone. Wink

My understanding is that Roselli was sent out west by Frank Nitti, to protect or oversee "Nationwide", which at the time was the only horserace wire service in the country. While in CA, he became invloved in the motion picture industry, which is pretty well documented.

The Roselli Capone/Outfit connection has been repeated often indeed. Roselli was in Los Angeles running liquor for Cornero before Capone took over Chicago from Johnny Torrio. The first links between Roselli and Chicago emerged during the Hollywood extortion caper. It wasn't until the mob books started appearing that people began calling Roselli a Chicago outfit guy. It was well known and understood that Roselli worked first for Cornero and later joined Jack Dragna in running gambling operations in Los Angeles.

Another interesting piece of history about Frank Nitti which further discounts the notion that Roselli was sent west by the enforcer is, Nitti himself at the time Roselli was known to be an active member of Tony Cornero's liquor operation, Nitti was living in Galveston Texas, dealing with members of the liquor gang headed by Dutch Voight. The most prominent members to arise from this operation were the Maceo brothers who are ancestors to the Fertitta family who own the Golden Nugget, Stations Casinos and UFC.

I was just about to ask you did Roselli have ties to The Maceos and by extension to the Bronfmanns and TR?

Roselli and Sam Maceo were both influential figures in the entertainment industry and Las Vegas. Whereas the Maceos represented the interest of the Moody family whose source of wealth was intimately tied to the 'Civil War era' activities of Henry Lehman and Jacob Schiff of Kuhn, Loeb & Company.

It is a most interesting place where history, tradition and influence merge in an confusingly amusing manner. Friends seem to be matters of convenience and family members often square off in highly publicized feuds over seemingly trivial matters. However upon closer inspection many of these "trivial matters" involve the protection ancestral secrets and legacies built upon myth and deceit. Nonetheless it is most entertaining to watch.

It`s funny how you got to the Moody`s and back to the Rothschilds via Galveston. What seems small ultimately opens to something bigger.

Easy link considering the links between Jacob Schiff's Jewish immigrant association and Galveston.
