I would like to hear people's opinions on how the Los Angeles family would have been had Jimmy been made boss.

Jimmy had everything you would need to be successful with the exception of timing. Two things which really worked against Jimmy was his propensity to take things personally and then to lash out verbally. Jimmy was notorious for badmouthing people and that is what made him something of an outsider with the LA family. The second thing which always seemed to work against him was his sense of timing. At every turn when the LA family changed hands he was under indictment in prison or just emerging from prison. When he got the acting-boss slot he was in such a hurry to prove himself capable of running the show that he overstepped his bounds and the close ties between Fratianno and Bonanno drew suspicion that he was plotting a palace coup. Unfortunately had he gained the top slot how effective would he have been, probably not very as the FBI was on his tail from the moment he got out of prison and started barnstorming the country. You have to remember he was being watched very closely when he was indicted for extortion in 1977 and faced the possibility of dying behind bars.

One thing you got to remember about Jimmy, he was informing to the FBI during his time as boss of the family. The book by Demaris really glosses over this, making it look like he was just using the feds to get money, never telling how much of a relationship he really had with them at the time he was acting boss. I wonder what kind of deal he had with the FBI during the late 60's-early 70's? Any clues Jigs?

There was talk of Fratianno having provided the information which led to the jailing of Johnny Battaglia in the 60s on bookmaking charges. It is unlikely that Fratianno began his co-operation with the FBI in the mid to late 70s rather much earlier. Fratianno spent his entire career chasing respect and influence, two things he failed to acheive until late in his career at the expense of others.

I've always felt that the promotion given to Jimmy was nothing more than the same plot used to whack Bomp. Just get the guy comfortable and loose, and look for the right opportunity. I think Jimmy took the bait and realized afterwards what a fool he'd been. He had only two ways out from that point.
